Cuban sandwich rolls are wonderful! Their texture is somewhat crusty like a French baguette, but still soft and flavorful like an Italian rustic loaf. Cuban rolls are perfect for making cubanos, but you can make any kind of savory sandwich you like.
By Hand
Combine yeast, water, salt, lard, and sugar into a large bowl and stir well to proof. Wait for 5 minutes, add half the flour and incorporate. Add the remaining flour and combine thoroughly.
Put dough on a lightly floured surface and knead dough for 3-5 minutes.
Lightly grease a large bowl and place dough inside. Cover the bowl and put in a warm area until the dough has doubled in size.
With a Stand Mixer
Place flour, salt, sugar, and yeast into the bowl of the stand mixer. Attach the dough hook, run the mixer on low to medium speed, and slowly add the water and lard. Run the mixer until the dough forms a ball.
Lightly grease a large bowl and place dough inside. Cover the bowl with a towel and put in a warm area until the dough has doubled in size.
With a Bread Machine
Place the ingredients in this order into bread machine; water, flour, sugar, salt, lard, and yeast. Select the dough setting.
Notes
If the dough is too dry then add additional water in 1 tablespoon increments. If the dough is too sticky then add additional flour in 1 tablespoon increments.
