How to Make Pizza Dough

I love having pizza dough around the house. It is wonderful for making pizzas of course, but the dough is so versatile I use it to make all kinds of items like garlic knots, bagels, and pita bread! Learn three simple ways of making pizza dough at home!

With a Bread Machine

Place the ingredients in order into bread machine; water, flour, salt, oil, sugar, yeast. Select the dough setting.

Turn the dough onto lightly floured surface and divide into two balls. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise for 30 to 60 minutes until slightly puffy.

With a Stand Mixer

Place flour, salt, sugar, and yeast into the bowl of the stand mixer. Attach the dough hook, run the mixer on low to medium speed, and slowly add the water and oil. Run the mixer until the dough forms a ball.

Lightly grease a large bowl and place dough inside. Cover the bowl and put in a warm area until the dough has doubled in size.

Turn the dough onto lightly floured surface and divide into two balls. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise for 30 to 60 minutes until slightly puffy.

By Hand

Combine yeast, water, salt, oil, and sugar into a large bowl and stir well to proof. Wait for 5 minutes, add half the flour and incorporate. Add the remaining flour and combine thoroughly.

Put dough on a lightly floured surface and knead dough for 5-7 minutes.

Lightly grease a large bowl and place dough inside. Cover the bowl and put in a warm area until the dough has doubled in size.

Turn the dough onto lightly floured surface and divide into two balls. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise for 30 to 60 minutes until slightly puffy.

Notes

If the dough is too dry then add additional water in 1 tablespoon increments. If the dough is too sticky then add additional flour in 1 tablespoon increments.

Pizza Dough Recipe

Yields 2 (15 inch) pizza crusts

Ingredients

1 1/4 cups warm water (110 F/ 45 C)

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon olive oil or vegetable oil

1 1/2 teaspoon sugar

1 1/2 teaspoon active dry yeast

Garnish: favorite toppings

Directions

Use one of the methods for creating dough above.

Preheat oven to 475 F

Toss the dough and then shape to make a 15-inch pizza crust. Or using a floured rolling pin, roll the dough and then shape to make a 15-inch pizza crust.

Transfer dough to nonstick pizza pan and top with favorite toppings. Place pizza pan in oven. Bake for 12 to 18 minutes depending of what kind of toppings were used.

Serve Hot.

For a crispy pizza, bake the dough on a pizza stone.
